Soul Songs (6/22/18)
From the ashes of Echo Park’s TÜLIPS rises cosmic punk Taleen Kali, who brings you a new kind of fiery floral fuzz from the underbelly of L.A.’s noise rock scene. You may have seen her signature red hair flaming amongst concert crowds in L.A., playing an intimate set with her guitar, or a full ethereal sonic attack of a 4-piece rock outfit. She’s opened for acts such as Madame Gandhi and Kimya Dawson, as well as fests such as Echo Park Rising, Mothership, and Women Fuck Shit Up Fest.
Soul Songs was recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound studios in Hollywood where Taleen Kali teamed up with producer Kristin Kontrol (ex-Dum Dum Girls) and longtime musical mentor Brad Laner (Medicine) who mixed the record. Taleen also brought on her longtime bassist Miles Marsico (TÜLIPS, New Technology) and drummer Rhys Hastings (Gothic Tropic) for the project.
Soul Songs features five songs which are about transformation, change, transcendence, with the hope to bring sonic healing to anyone who experiences it. The record is at once exuberant and heavy, danceable and dark, mixing elements of shoegaze, goth, psych, noise-pop, punk, and disco.
Expanding her sonic palette considerably in her second recording project, Taleen Kali’s record features an array of synths, guitar pedals from Death By Audio, and sound healing instruments such as Meinl angel tuning forks and singing bowls (which she started exploring in her Kali Punk Yoga classes in L.A.).
